The environmental protection agency will start enforcement of higher efficiency requirements within new HVAC equipment with the phase out of our current refrigerant, 410a. The new refrigerants chosen by HVAC manufactures are R32 & R454B. Starting 2025 410 equipment will no longer be manufactured, however parts and the refrigerant itself will still be available to repair existing units.
The environmental protection agency has already started enforcement of Seer2 requirements. Starting January 1, 2024 all new equipment installed must be a Seer rating of 15 or higher. Anyone who already owns existing equipment lower than 15 seer will not be affected. However, those who are looking for new unit installation need to make sure the contractor they are working with is installing Seer2 compliant equipment.
R32 and R454b will allow for units to be rated at a higher efficiency. R32 equipment is known to be 10% higher in efficiency in comparison to 410a. Secondly, R32 equipment in an apples to apples comparison will use less refrigerant in the same size system as 410a.
R32 & R454b have less of an impact on the global warming factor than existing and past refrigerants therefore helping our planet stay safe.
R32 specifically is a globally accepted refrigerant. In fact, North America is late, whereas most other countries have all already adopted over to R32.
For those who own existing 410a units will have little to no affect in the near future. 410a will be phased out slowly and parts for your units will be available for purchase likely well into 2030-2040. Only new 410a equipment will no longer be made for installation of a full system change out.
